Times range from 3.3 to 6.5 hours for the run from Skyline to Big Mountain (mile 23.95 to 39.40). A "Drop Bag" station at the end of this section has water, food, and electrolyte drinks. NO CREW VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE PAST THE BOUNTIFUL B CHECKPOINT ON THE 4WD ROAD. After 5 miles of smooth to rough and rocky dirt road, water, some foods, and electrolyte drinks will be portioned out at the Sessions aid station, mile 28.23, just before the switchbacks up Sessions Mountain. Temperatures can get very hot. It can be cold as well, especially if it is windy. Another small aid station is at mile 34.91 (Swallow Rocks). Brush is very thick in the middle part of this section and there are frequent rocky areas with loose rocks to negotiate. Runners have a stiff climb up Sessions Pass to mile 29.62. There are short climbs and descents that are hazardous due to rocks and brush after the Sessions climb. In dry years, dust from defoliated grazing areas becomes severe. A change of socks is highly recommended at the end of this section. Another hint: many runners consider duct tape as important as water on this run. At the checkpoint runners descend from the east and cross Highway 89. They leave going west slightly uphill, and head south again. CREWS MAY PARK IN THE BIG MOUNTAIN PASS PARKING AREA BUT IT GETS CONGESTED AND PARKING ON THE MAIN ASPHALT ROAD BEFORE AND AFTER THE PASS MAY BE NECESSARY - USE CAUTION - IT CAN BE CROWDED AND HAZARDOUS. Pacers are permitted for all runners starting here (age 60 and above can have pacers from the start). For access, drive east from Salt Lake City along I-80 for about 5 miles. Turn north at the East Canyon Recreation Area and follow Highway 65 for about 9 miles. There are several steep switchbacks on the two-lane asphalt road just before reaching the pass.
